02Hello, everyone. Thanks for coming. My name is Charice Magsapoc. I'm the admissions adviser for the master's in psychology program. A little bit background about me is I got my bachelor's in engineering from University, and I actually graduated with a master's in psychology in 2023, just last year, through Divine Mercy University. So I'm happy to talk to you a lot about how the coursework works and what what's like to be a student. But if you're in the chat right now, I would like to start out with where do you live, occupation, and why psychology. So while we're here, I'm gonna explain a little bit about why I got into psychology myself. I was in engineering. I was in the oil field for several years, but I had a lot of student debt coming out of Carnegie Mellon University, so I actually worked as an engineer for for a while.
55I was offshore Alaska, offshore Gulf Coast. Also, I'm doing a a lot of land work, but I was on rigs doing production. And then once I paid off my student loans, I actually entered, a religious community, NudhistHealth Carmelites, for a few years. Just turned out of religious life, and my parish priest at home actually offered me a position at my home parish for sacrament. So I did infant baptism, confirmation, RCIA, first communion, and that was where I was encountering a lot of families, a lot of kids, a lot of teenagers that had just tons of questions, and I just needed this psychological background. And I've heard about Divine Mercy University actually when I was still in college back in 2009.
40So, finally, it was the Lord's time for me to say, oh, it's time to go and learn psychology. I wanted to help my families. I wanted to do small groups, large groups. How can I how can I be a better communicator to other people? So, woah, a lot more answers came in. Thank you, Alyssa. Oh, that's great. Deaf, deaf education consultant. That's amazing. Thank you, Latoya, being a social worker. Awesome. Fort Collins, Colorado. Oh, hello, Colorado. Volunteer ministry. Okay. Fantastic. Oh, yes. Absolutely. Substance abuse. That's a great that's a great thing to research a little bit more. And behavior tech. Okay. Awesome. K. So thank you so much for answering all these questions, and I will do a little bit more questions and answers as we go along as well.
33But I'll go ahead and get started with our master's in psychology. K? So here at Divine Mercy University, our master's in psychology is 100 online. No GRE required, but that will just depend on if your, let's say your GPA is way too low, and you can use GRE to help make your application a little bit more competitive. But, really, a 100% online. Generally, no GRE required. So a little bit of background, Divine Mercy University, we were founded in 1999 at the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, which is just solely, a a school of psychology. We really base our, our teachings around scientific study of psychology and counseling with the Catholic Christian understanding of the person. K? And then 2015, we added the school of counseling.
22So with two different schools, we upgraded the university status, the Divine Mercy University. And Divine Mercy is just an amazing symbol of healing and love, and that's why we use Divine Mercy. K? And Divine Mercy is also accredited through SACSCOC, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. That's through the Department of Education. So that also in that region, the Southern Association of Colleges, also include the Southern Side. So you're talking about Auburn, University of Texas, and all these Southern schools, so we are actually a part of that. K? So how is our online master's in psychology unique? 100% online classes on your schedule. So this, I thought, was super amazing because, again, it's a 100% online.
09So we also have a lot of international students in our program because they're able to access our education system anywhere around the world. I mean, I was even on a cruise in The Caribbean, and I was downloading audiobooks on my on my phone, watching lectures on my phone. So it's actually just that accessible. And, really, classes on your schedule, outside of weekly due dates, make sure you make sure you remember when Eastern Eastern Standard Time is. But other than that, really, classes on your schedule, you learn on your own. Built on an integrated approach to psychology. So there's this textbook. You can get it on Amazon. It's called the Catholic Christian Metal Model of the Person. And there are three main sections of that book, which I thought was fascinating.
52I was scared as a person who majored in engineering. I had maybe one writing course in my entire life. I was so scared about writing and reading books, but it was an amazing textbook. And you go through the entire thing in the program. So we view each person philosophically, theologically, and psychologically. We are made in the image and likeness of God, but we have rational thought and emotions. But then how does that play into living virtuous lives, following our vocation? How does that lead me to flourishing and help help others flourish as well? K. The book, I'm gonna write it in the chat here. K. Catholic oop. If I can spell. Catholic Christian meta model of the person. K? Catholic Christian Meta Model of the Person.
42Amazing book, and it was fairly accessible. I was it was more accessible than I thought because I think sometimes psychology can be common sense, but it's nice to have it written down and just explained to you as well. It's a very accessible book. Really great read. I loved it very much. There are two completion options for this, masters, which is a sixteen month, which is a full time load. You're talking about maybe thirty to forty hours a week dedicated to your classes or the twenty six month completion option, which was really great for me because I was a full time worker as a part time student. K? Then this will just be one class at a time. You're dedicating about ten to twenty hours a week, for the twenty six month option.
26So this is just over one year, and it's just over two years. K? Individualized feedback from faculty, which I thought was really fascinating. I got an email every week from my professor telling me how I'm doing, what I need to work on. Really, the whole point of that is just to make sure you're not just on the right track, but to see if you're if you have any questions, any, anything that you're having trouble comprehending, for example. Right? So it's great to have this weekly feedback from faculty. Small student to faculty ratio, I think the most I've ever had in one class is maybe 20, which is really nice. Right? I got to know each of those people really well. I mean, I still have the group chat from my cohort still going on my WhatsApp, so it's nice to have that connection with all of all of the students.
14We have different kinds of learning modalities as well, books, prerecorded lectures, audiobook. And then you also get opportunities as well to implement what you've learned and reflect on it, k, as well as experienced and supportive faculty. So benefits of the psychology program. Go ahead and read through these. Okay? Because, really, the whole point of psychology is just to help because you want to help other people. But first, we have to really learn ourselves. Right? The you you wanna gain a better understanding of yourself while you're reading state psychology, while you're going through these science classes. It's good to understand yourself. You can help so you can help others, succeed as well.
58Right? If I can flourish for myself, I can help other people flourish. And not just, you know, at the workplace, but also just personally. You can also start to offer innovative solutions to problems based on psychological explanation of behaviors. You're going to go through a lot of classes, and I'm going to explain explain what those classes are. K? Really, for me, the most important benefit for me was developing excellence in communication. There are some classes that are focused more on counseling and how to do more one on one work or group work. And for me, I learned how to not only communicate well, but also to lead groups as well. K. Ray, how many classes in this session, four to sixty months, have the cohort set up?
43Well, everyone has the same number of classes, and I'll explain that. But, six for the sixteen month track, it's two classes at a time. K? And I'll explain that a little bit more. How many weeks per semester? So each class is an are eight weeks long. Each class is eight week eight eight weeks long. And we call that a term. So there are two terms in the fall, two terms in the spring, one term in the summer. Five terms in total each year, but we have a fall, spring, and summer semester, so to speak. K? So this is not for, for license. This is just for general psychology. But I will explain the counseling one a little bit later as well. K? Because I'm also an admissions adviser for the counseling program, and I can explain that a little bit more as well.
37So these are the benefits of the psychology program. K? Okay. So question and answer time. Okay? So these are the concentrations we have in the master's in psychology program. Just from the name itself. Go ahead and write down what you're interested in. K? Because I wanna make sure I get, again, some more in-depth explanation to the ones that you're interested in. In the meantime k. This is so funny because this is me. They put my picture on the deck, which I actually kind of love. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Divine Mercy. And what I ended up doing was a little bit of human services and a little bit of leadership. That's called the self design track. K. So, go ahead and write down what track you're interested in.
28Oh, yes. You'll be able to access the recording. Yes. Usually, they'll edit it a little bit, and then they'll post it on our YouTube channel. So no worries. Marriage and family therapy. I'm from Illinois. Okay. Leadership from pre PhD. Excellent. Okay. I'm getting really good responses here. I love it. Marriage and family. Okay. I got all sorts. That's a I love it. Okay. So I'm gonna try to go through a little bit of detail for each track. K. All of them are great concentrations in the in in our program. So in our program, there's a total of 11 courses. 11 courses. K? 11 courses, and eight of those are four courses. And these are the eight core courses that everyone has to complete. K? So the initial that intro to psychology oh, cool.
22All of the above. I love that. Cool. Intro to psychology. Just to get you to understand now the Catholic Christian approach to psychology, we want to view the whole person. Right? Secular psychology really tends to be more about these are your symptoms. This is what you diagnose. Here's your possible treatment plan slash medication plan, and that's not what we want. We wanna see the whole person. We wanna see what what, what what adverse health experiences have you had? What is your current living, living situation? I mean, let's look at the whole process. Look at look at the whole person. K? The second class is developmental psychology. I mean, you only have eight weeks in each class, but in in each week for this class, you went through an age group.
12You went through newborns and then infancy and then childhood, adolescence, early childhood, late adult sorry. Early adulthood, late adulthood, elderhood. Like, that was just so fascinating for me because you go through what each age group is going through physically, cognitively, spiritually, emotionally. That this class was one of my favorite classes. I also had a great professor there. K. Developmental again. Hey. Developmental psychology is awesome. K. I actually loved it. Developmental psychopathology, which is more abnormal psychology, you know, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, substance abuse, and how risk and resilience plays into that the psychopathology. Cognition, emotion, motivation, I call this the BRAIN class.
03It's really more about how we think, how peep what are what motivates people, how people make decisions, how do how does your brain create emotion. K? So you get to learn about the parts of the brain and how it works. The next class is the only philosophy course on vocations and virtues Because, yes, you have all of these you you get you're getting you're gaining a lot of psych psychological science knowledge, but then how can I apply it? Let's think let's think whole person. Right? The person has vocations. They are called to do something. They also are called to live virtuous lives as well. A lot of, John Paul the second writings in here as well, so this is really great. Statistics, the only, quote, unquote, math course.
50Now as an engineer, I'm kind of against statistics because it's like numbers with words, but don't worry about the math. For those who haven't done math in a long time, it's okay. It's really more about can you interpret the data? Can you interpret the data? So you're reading a lot of research papers for this course, but I actually thoroughly enjoyed it. It was really neat to understand different kinds of statistics. K? Social psychology, how group work, and how diversity plays into those groups. Really understanding how to lead groups as well, very important. And then research methodology and design. So, again, we are a research heavy, we are a research heavy program, so it's good to understand how research is done as well as evaluating program.
37Now as I said, there were 11 courses in total, but there are three electives, and you will find those in the tracks themselves. K? I actually got a lot of, I got a lot of feedback on each track, so I'm just gonna go through each of them. K? So for the marriage and family track prepares students to encourage couples and families towards flourishing, such as marriage prep, marriage enrichment education programs, training couples, become directors of marriage and family in their churches. K? So we have a lot of we have a lot of people that actually move into marriage, and family related occupations after taking this track. And these are the three electives for the marriage and family track. I forgot to mention earlier that even, let's say, if you don't know which track you're gonna go into, there's time.
24Right? Because there are a few core courses you still have to take before you take these anyway. So it's okay. They would like to know probably in the beginning what you're probably interested in, but your academic adviser will actually help you, decide, which track really suits what you're looking for. K? So, again, these are the three electives, their marriage and family track. I forgot which which class in general, but you become one of these, you become a focus facilitator, which is a marriage prep, a marriage preparation program. The human services track here, I consider this more of a counseling sort of the counseling track. K? So remember, this is not for licensure, but if you want to take some counseling courses, this is the one.
07I took two of these courses. K. The first one is, that I took was called relationship intervention skills theory and application, and this one taught you how to work with people one on one. You actually had to record yourself on practicing a lot of empathy, how to attend to people, how to show what's the difference between sympathy and empathy. Right? So this is really for those who meet, people one on one a lot more on a daily basis, those who are in social work or in some kind of human services occupation. The other one I did was called group counseling group work. We did a lot of, meetings on Zoom. I mean, Zoom is obviously not the best thing if you're gonna learn counseling, but it taught me how to lead group.
53It taught me how I work in a group, how I can lead people in a group, as well as how I can be, a better follower by being a better leader. Now I was actually kind of bummed because one of my one of my friends in my cohort actually said the personality individual differences intelligence was an amazing course. It really taught you, like, how how personalities work. This the different theories of personalities and how does that play into the communication that you give to other people. K? Let's see. How many total credit units? Okay. Yeah. I will get to finances at the end. I just wanna make sure you understand the program first. Okay? Third is leadership. Leadership concentration, leadership track, trains individuals who are responsible for leading people, programs, and organizations.
46K? So I said I was a I was, a sacraments coordinator at my previous parish, but I also was a leader. I was a point of contact for a lot of families who had a lot of questions, who are coming back to the church, and I led small groups, large groups. So a leadership concentration was actually really good for me as well. I think I took transformational leadership. I just wanted to be a better leader and not I want I need more leadership skills. Right? So we actually have a lot of VPs, CEOs, human resources, people in our program as well, and this was perfect for them. Right? This is a great chance for them to really better their organization. And then if you're not sure which track you really wanna go into, self design is a great option.
35K? So about more about a third of our students choose self design because they would rather choose the elective that fits, their interest best. K? So when I did self design, I did relationship intervention skills, transformational leadership, and then the group counseling and group work. K? So, hopefully, that's really interesting to people, because it's they're all psych psychology based, and we're still trying to see what more we can add to these tracks. But we are slowly developing that over time. For those who want to go into PhD, k, a PhD program. The pre PhD track means you actually write a thesis. K? You will you will actually have to come up with a research plan, get it approved, do the research, write your thesis, and defend at the end of your program.
29K. It's actually kinda neat. If you're in the program already, you can actually attend, the public defenses on Zoom. It's actually kind of neat. K? So this thesis, so instead of remember I said we have three electives. Right? So two of them will be taken up with thesis writing, and then you get one free elective. K? You get to choose one elective you want, but the other two electives will be for thesis work. K? Now that's not to say that your master's doesn't include like, for those who just want to do a normal track, that it doesn't conclude it doesn't end with a thesis, but it does end with something called a capstone project. K? So a capstone project, essentially, is if you're finding a need or, like, a like, a gap in one of your programs or what you do, at work, and you research and you write a paper, and you do sort of present at the end of the program.
25So for example, I I'm a sacrament I was a sacraments coordinator. The our the first communion program at my parish was geared solely for kids. That was it. And I realized that the kids won't care about communion and mass if the parents don't care. I researched, parents, small group learning, Gen z versus Boomer versus millennial learning styles, and all of that culminated into a capstone project in which now not just my parish now has child formation and parent formation for first communion, and they do it they do it together. Right? Not only did the parents get to meet other adults in their community, but the kids get to also meet other kids in their age group as well, and the whole family then is supported through first communion instead of just teaching kids point blank, you know, what first communion is.
23So that was my capstone project. Now you don't have to implement your capstone project, but you do research and come up with a solution. K? Well, I just happen to be able to to execute mine. So that's the prepaid fee track. They will they will, of course, assign you an adviser. You will, again, have to come up with a research plan, get it approved, and do the research and defend. K? Now the bioethics track is really perfect for those who are in health care health care field. Now those remember when I said that there are three electives? The three electives here are taken through the National Catholic Bioethics Center, and they have modules here for health care. K? Foundations of Catholic health care, ethical challenges at the beginning and end of life, about research, vaccines, and gender.
10So this is super important for those who who face these bioethical challenges in their line of work. K? Now you can just get the certificate if you want just a bioethics, but you're already more than halfway through the program. If you just wanna do a certificate, you can just finish the masters. That's really up to you. So the learning experience, as I mentioned earlier, you really get the ability to work anywhere, anytime. K? So my friends who are in Columbia and other places in the world, no problem. You have continuous access to the learning management system, which is called Canvas. And, again, I pointed out the weekly individualized feedback from your professors. And, really, you can travel, and you can still do work wherever.
57Now there are weekly due dates. As long as you keep track of your weekly due dates, no problem. So, I in my previous line of work, I was working weekends. I was working nights. So I just set aside a few hours every morning to do the work. This is our core faculty. Doctor Julia Talley here is the program director. Super nice. You can always reach out to her. And the rest of our faculty, of course, have PhDs or clinical or clinical psychologist. K? Doctor Gross here is the, philosophy professor and all the rest. I have I have actually taken a course from every professor on this page, and they were amazing. Once you get in starting to do your capstone project, you will get assigned an adviser, and my adviser was actually doctor Williamson.
46He was also in Texas at the time, so it was really great to have someone close by as well. K? So this is the core faculty. Not all the faculty, but some but some of them. So that being said, let's talk about the acceptance requirement. K? You must have a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the Department of Education or an internationally recognized institution. K? So, my bachelor's degree was in engineering, and that's no problem. K? Any major can apply for the master's in psychology because you, it's okay if you don't have the prerequisites in psychology because you will get it all back in the program. Now for those who my those who are international students, you need to get their transcript evaluated if you haven't done so already.
38K? Evaluated by, someone here in The US. WES is, WES is a typical organization that can do that and make sure that it is equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA to be admitted. Those less than two point, ten five can choose to do their GRE as well, but we can always talk about that a little bit more. I want masters psychology and present and learn a few. Oh, awesome. Thank you, Daniel. Yes. Let me let me talk about that a little bit more in a second. Okay? That's great. Two letters of recommendation. We do have recommendation links, in which you will send to recommenders, and we need two of those. Resume, written statement of intent indicating how your goals align with the goals of the program.
33And then for, those who are from non native English speaking countries, a TOEFL or an IELTS score. K? You can take the online version. No problem. But, really, what we're focused on is we we want you to succeed. K? So writing is the most important component for the program. Must have a good writing score for English. And now, as I said, I was an engineer. I had very little writing. But by the end of the program, you will be a writer. So no problem. K? I realized that I was really scared about writing, but when you love what you learn, it's not a chore. There is also a mandatory virtual orientation, as part of your onboarding into the university. So is grad school affordable? Because we are accredited, we do qualify for federal aid student loans.
27So what I did was, actually, I did a third student loans, a third scholarship, and a third out of pocket. So it didn't really hit the the wallet quite as hard. But definitely look in whether or not your employer has tuition reimbursement. Okay? Definitely look into that. Definitely also look into the diocese or maybe your pastor or your church might be willing to help you out as well. We are we do have approved veterans funding through the GI Bill for those who are in the military. We have the full list of scholarships and grants available here. The most the easiest one to get is the early admission scholarship. You can get up to 1,500 off your tuition if you if I get your application in, I do.
10K? There are also alternative methods of financing such as private funds out of pocket. Look for your any carriers or diocesan support. Always reach out. There's a lot of nonprofit, definitely locally, that can match funds, k, and cash plan. For me, this was super important. So through the school, through Divine Mercy, I was able to set up monthly payment plans, interest free. K? So if you're only going to be charged for the classes you're about to take, so whatever semester it is, whatever two classes I was about to take, I would pay for those, but I would set up monthly payment plans. And it was super helpful in that way. So with 11 courses, three credit hours per per course. K. Excuse me.
56$850 per credit. With thirty credit hours with the technology fees for Canvas and all of the library access as well, all the research papers you have access to, the other libraries you have access to. I thought that was great. There's a tech fee of $50. There's also a residency fee. So in that first class, there is a Friday and a Saturday residence, residency. Just that's the only time that you're required to meet online, k, as part of the program. The rest is really asynchronous. Total comes down to $28,008.50. Now there is an application fee, but, I can because you have come into the webinar today, I'm going to send you the the code to waive the application fee. K? So no problem, sir. I'm confused about the bioethics track.
46Are there additional credit requirements in addition to MS psychology core and electives? No. No. So in terms of the bioethics track, you do your four modules through the NCBC, and now that counts as the three electives. K. So for those who want to do the sixteen month truck, there is a slight discount for you in the first four courses. So that tuition is only 25,500. But do keep in mind, again, it's a full time load. You're You're talking about thirty to forty hours a week spent writing, reading, talking to professors, doing all that work. K? If you're doing the twenty six month route, it's still 20 around 28,000. Okay. Now is the time. If you have any other questions that I can answer while I'm here, I am during this time, go ahead and write questions, but I'm going to talk about the master's in counseling program.
42I know some of you were super interested in getting licensed as a therapist, and I am also the admissions adviser for that program. But this is not the math in psychology is not for licensure. K? Math in psychology is really research based, science based, learning how to research, learning how to create programs and effectively evaluate them as well, making sure that they're working the way you want to, really research based. If you want to do counseling, I'm gonna put my information here at the end. You can always email me, and we can talk about counseling instead. Are there any other questions from the master's in psychology program? I'm missing oh, there's two q and a. I am so sorry. Please explain more between MS psychology and MS counseling.
32Okay. I will go a little bit more into that. So MS in psychology is just your general psychology, research psychology, k? Where you can actually go ahead into a PhD into research psychology after this, after this program. And that's in counseling. It's, will prepare you for, like, for your licensing exam in your state. K. Our MS in counseling is CACREP accredited, so our program fits all 50 states. Now there's, like, maybe 10 states that need an extra class, but that's, again, still built into the program. K. However, it is twice as long than MSP. MSP is thirty three credit hours. MSP is sixty six, and that's per k credit accreditation. That's what they require. The built into the program is also seven hundred clinical hours.
23And after you finish the MS in counseling program, one hundred percent of our students pass their licensing exam. That's a great statistic that we're trying to keep, and we love that. Okay? Excuse me. Can we focus more than one concentration such as marriage and family and prepaid fee or something else? So the first three tracks that I was talking about, which were, marriage and family, leadership, and, human services. Those three, you can interchange. Pre PhD, however, you can do that alongside another one, but, of course, you would still have to pay for the thesis writing courses. But definitely doable. Definitely something we can talk to the program director about. Interested in licensing, how much?
13Is there any way to combine MS psychology and counseling? So I there are we do have a lot of students that do both programs. They would do a MSP and then move into counseling. There are up to fifteen fifteen no. 18 up to up to 18 credits that can be transferred over to the counseling program, but that's not all of them. Right? So our courses some of our courses are also, possibly CACREP accredited as well. So some of those courses can transfer over to a counseling program. Are there any other questions? K. Any other questions for me while I'm here? Because for now, I'm gonna put my info here. Okay? For those of you who are interested in counseling, please email me. I would love to talk to you on the side.
08Or if you're interested possibly in the next stem, webinar for counseling, I will also give that information to you as well. So go ahead and call me, text me. I do like text. Text are great. K? Oh, yes. Daniel, let me go back and talk to you. I'm the person who's going for a master's course future of field psychology. I want to learn a new philosophy from my theory. I want to be part of the founding ground ground layers in psychology. So why don't I connect you, Daniel, to the, you said a new philosophy from my theory. So is it really philosophical based, your theory? I can definitely connect you with doctor Gross, who is our philosophy professor. He's really great. I have such good memories of him.
09K. Daniel, is that okay if I connect you? Yeah. Okay. I'll make sure I make a note of that that I will connect you, Daniel Henriques, k, to the philosophy, professor. I I will go ahead and do that. We do that all the time as well. I would love to connect anyone with faculty who is really interested. Michelle, you're asking for how much the counseling program is? Okay. The counseling program, just in general, without scholarship, without grant, is around 67,000. So that being said, if you are interested for the August start, now is the time to apply. K? Don't forget that the early admission scholarship still applies. And I can give you I will send everyone the code so that we can waive that application fee so that you don't even have to pay to go through the admissions process.
13Okay? And if you're thinking about trying it, I will send you the link here right after this webinar. So we always try to find some kind of scholarship and grant for every student. We always do. We always try to find something like that. K? For those who have really good GPAs, definitely look into the merit scholarship. K. That could be up to 50% discount, if you compete for that. Yes. I will be sending out this presentation with the email. So no problem. You can always look through it again. Is there an average rate for scholarships awarded? Average range? We will most likely try to find some 10 to 15% for each student somehow.
