Starting Mental Health Therapy Sessions (Telehealth Now Available)

0:14The decision to begin therapy can feel like an overwhelming task. But like any new journey, it begins with taking the first step. Some individuals don't know what to expect from their first session and may be plagued by fears or misconceptions about what the therapeutic process actually entails. In reality, this process would begin before you even walk through our doors. Before arriving for your initial appointment, you would speak with our intake coordinator over the phone, who would discuss your current needs, explain how therapy works, and address any further questions or concerns that you may have. The intake coordinator would also send you an information packet, which includes all the necessary material concerning the therapeutic process, as well as information about the IPS center and your rights as a client.

1:08The packet would also include a questionnaire intended to gather information about your current situation, as well as any past history that may be related to your current struggles. From there, the coordinator would pair you with one of our competent and professional therapists who would contact you to schedule your first appointment. A main aspect of working with your new therapist would be forming what is known as the Therapeutic Alliance, which, as the name suggests, is the safe and supportive relationship between therapist and client. There is much evidence to support that a strong alliance predicts more successful outcomes in therapy. While this alliance differs from a common friendship or a traditional doctor patient relationship, its purpose nonetheless is to allow you to feel comfortable with your therapist, to have a sense of common goals and purpose in working together, and to establish a deep sense of trust in the therapeutic process.
