Listening with Love and Praying with the Pope this World Mental Health Day

Both the Pope and secular organizations have made October a time to focus on mental health. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) (n.d.-b) has posted the Pope’s intention for October:

“For mental health ministry: Let us pray that the mental health ministry be established throughout the Church, helping to overcome the stigma and discrimination of persons with mental illnesses.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) and World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) observe October 10th as World Mental Health Day, and this year’s theme is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change” (WFMH, 2026).

The day is the culmination of Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 4–10; NAMI Cumberland, Harnett and Lee Counties, 2026), which spans two other notable observances: National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding (October 6) and National Depression Screening Day (October 8; Mental Health America, 2026).

These observances are centered on an attempt to facilitate a growth in the recognition of the dignity of others, particularly those who struggle with mental health challenges.

As we celebrate World Mental Health Day, please join Divine Mercy University’s mission of facilitating healing through your prayers. Perhaps consider praying the U.S. bishops’ Novena for Mental Health, which begins each year on World Mental Health Day and opens by asking the intercession of Saint Dymphna, whose name DMU’s chapel bears (USCCB, n.d.-a).

May this World Mental Health Day be one of listening and hope.
